Here are the top four stories today in Marietta:
- Marietta Middle School social-emotional learning teacher Methany Thornton will soon have her new home, as she will be Marietta’s first recipient of the city’s Public Service Housing Program for employees. The city has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to construct affordable housing for city officials. Three homes are scheduled to be built this year with three more to follow in 2024. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
- Marietta City Council approved the city's $396 million budget, lowering the rate and allocating additional funding for 3 percent of staff salaries. Beginning Jul. 1, the budget will be approximately $3.6 million higher than the previous year's budget. The city’s general fund, which is discretionary, will be used to pay for police, fire, public works, and parks and recreation, is now $73.7 million. (MDJ Online)
- A large rotten oak tree split in two before falling, causing a roof to collapse at a Cobb County home after a thunderstorm overnight on Sunday. The other half of it fell into the road over Crestridge Drive and the rest of the home appeared unharmed. Thankfully, the tree did miss nearby powerlines. The Marietta Fire Department was able to clear the road using chainsaws. (WSB Atlanta)
- An internal investigation is being conducted by The Cobb Sheriff’s Office after Augustus Green, 19, from Decatur, died Saturday evening by apparent suicide at the county jail. Green has been held in a standard cell since March on several charges. Green is the seventh inmate to die since 2021 and the second to pass this year. (MDJ Online)

- Gasoline prices are on the rise again in Georgia! Georgia's average regular unleaded gasoline price has risen by two cents to $3.29 per gallon. With the Jul. 4 holiday approaching, gas prices may increase. To find lower gas stations, visit gasbuddy.com. (Cobb County Courier)
- Have you seen or know of an abandoned vehicle in front of your house or business? To remove an abandoned vehicle from private property or public streets, call Cobb County's non-emergency number at 770-499-3911. Law enforcement may tow the vehicle, or property owners may need to make arrangements to have it removed. An officer will be dispatched to your location to assess the situation. (Marietta, Georgia Police Department via Facebook)
- Public Service Announcement for those who may know someone residing or working in the nearby Sandy Springs area! A boil-water advisory remains in effect in nearby Sandy Springs due to water main break repairs, requiring bottled water for drinking, cooking, baby food preparation, and teeth brushing. Though repairs have been completed, the advisory is to remain in place until the DWM clears the lift. (WSB Atlanta)
