American Legion Post 64 Giving Away School Supplies to Those in Need

Proof of receiving public assistance or of being a military dependent is required to qualify.

Walton County students head back to the classroom on Aug. 14 and now is the time that back to school preparations ramp up for families in the area. When money is tight, that can be tough. American Legion Post 64 is doing what it can to help.

The Post will have free school supplies for those in need in the community for students grades pre-K through eighth grade. These will be distributed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 10 at the American Legion Post 64, 318 Alcovy St. in Monroe. Participants must show proof of receiving public assistance or being a military dependent.

If anyone wants to contribute to this effort, they can mail a check to School Supplies for the Needy, P. O. Box 601, Monroe, GA 30655. If you know of anyone in the community that qualifies to receive these school supplies, you can direct them to the post on Aug. 10.

According to Elmer Swartzmeyer of the American Legion, funding is not as critical as it is to reach those in the community in need.

"Our biggest problem is participation," he said. "Last year we had lots and lots of supplies left over. We post notices at FISH and other thrift stores, notify charities and still we get few clients."
