How Much Do You Know About Monroe, The Antique Capital Of Georgia?

Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Monroe so special.

Monroe is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Monroe has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Did you know that Monroe is home to one of the largest collections of antebellum houses in Georgia? Take a stroll through the historical downtown area to see beautiful examples of Greek Revival, Gothic Revival and Queen Anne architecture. Many of these homes have been preserved and are now used as bed and breakfasts, event venues and museums.
  • For outdoor enthusiasts, Monroe has plenty of opportunities to explore nature. The Alcovy River runs through the city, offering fishing, kayaking and hiking. The Hard Labor Creek State Park is just a short drive away, with miles of trails, a lake for fishing and swimming and campsites for overnight stays.
  • Monroe is home to one of the oldest and most well-preserved courthouses in Georgia. The Walton County Courthouse was built in 1883 and still serves as the seat of government for the county. It features a clock tower, stained glass windows and a beautiful interior with original woodwork and furnishings.
  • The historic downtown area of Monroe has been used as a filming location for several movies and TV shows, including "The Vampire Diaries," "The Originals" and "Footloose." Take a walking tour to see if you recognize any of the locations.
  • If you're a fan of craft beer, be sure to check out the local brewery scene in Monroe. The city is home to several microbreweries, including Southern Brewing Company, which offers tastings and tours of its facility.
  • Monroe is home to the historic McDaniel-Tichenor House, which was built in 1887 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can take a tour of the beautifully restored Victorian home and learn about its history as a family residence and later as a school for girls.
  • Monroe is home to the Georgia State Farmers Market, which features a wide variety of fresh produce, meats and other locally-made products. Visitors can shop for everything from peaches and pecans to honey and handmade crafts.
  • For history buffs, nearby Newton County is home to the historic Burge Plantation, which dates back to the 1800s. The plantation features a restored antebellum home, as well as hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities on its sprawling grounds.
  • Monroe has a thriving downtown area with a variety of shops, restaurants and businesses. From antique stores to boutique clothing shops to locally-owned restaurants, there's something for everyone.
  • Monroe is located in the heart of Georgia's peach country, with several local orchards offering fresh peaches in the summer months. Visitors can pick their own peaches, enjoy peach ice cream and sample other peach products at these orchards.
  • The city is home to several parks and recreational areas, including Childers Park, a 17-acre park in the heart of the city. There are over a mile of walking trails, a dog park and plenty of space for children to play. It was originally the Monroe High School football stadium. You can also find beautiful public art in the park and plantings from local garden groups.
  • Those who collect antiques will love to visit Monroe. The city is situated in Walton County, which is home to the largest concentration of antique stores of any other county in Georgia. In downtown Monroe, visitors can find premier antique markets inside restored and refurbished cotton mills dating back to the 1900s.
