60 Displaced In Norcross Apartment Blaze

A fire that started on a deck forced an apartment building's evacuation and the displacement of 60 people in Norcross.

NORCROSS, GA — An apartment fire on Sunday caused the displacement of 60 people in the 1700 block of Graves Road, fire officials said.

Flames sparked around 2:45 a.m. on the balcony of a top-floor apartment, according to the Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services. A 911 caller told dispatch they were actively trying to evacuate the building.

When crews arrived, they saw heavy fire coming from the front of the multifamily, three-four split apartment building on the third level, fire officials said.

While firefighters were searching and evacuating the building, fire officials say the flames spread to a second apartment and into an attic.

Firefighters were then told to retreat from the building and try to take down the fire, officials said.

Ultimately, there were no injuries in the fire, officials said. The residents of the original apartment had been at the park all day and were not home, fire officials said.

The blaze began on the deck by an undetermined source, and the apartment building was extensively damaged on the third floor, fire officials said. The lower floors sustained smoke and water damage.

The American Red Cross and apartment management are assisting the displaced residents.
