Ashworth College Student Services Donates to Norcross Co-Op
Team's first service project of 2018 provides hygiene kits for low income and homeless neighbors
NORCROSS, GA β March 8, 2018 β Ashworth College routinely holds company-wide community service events but, in 2017, members of the Student Services department took it upon themselves to start giving more.
Led by their Operations Manager Darlene Craft, the team of 40 set out to tackle hyper-local community needs on a quarterly basis. For their first service project of 2018, they collected personal care itemsΒβtoothbrushes and toothpaste, dental floss, soap, disposable razors, shaving cream, combs, shampoo and conditioner, feminine hygiene products, nail clippers, hand sanitizer, facial tissue, and deodorantβand assembled them into more than 30 hygiene kits. The kits were donated to Norcross Cooperative Ministry (NCM), a non-profit that provides emergency assistance to low income and homeless neighbors in Norcross, Ga., and surrounding Gwinnett County. NCM is based just five miles from Ashworth College headquarters.
βOn top of working on fun things, we get to give back,β Craft said of her teamβs devotion to their service projects. βAnd we like to take care of everyone,β she added. βLast year we made colorful potted flowers and donated them to a senior citizensβ home up the street. We also started sponsoring Peachtree Elementary [a K - 5 school across the street from Ashworth College headquarters]. We see those kids and their families almost every day. Theyβre part of our community. We saw their need and we donated school supplies, books, and book bags.β

βIβm so proud of Student Services for working to meet needs where they can,β said Vice President of Student Experience Melissa Maddox. βAshworth College has been increasing its focus on community service for more than a decade, but itβs really special for an individual department to take on even more. Darlene and her team have raised the bar on giving back to our community.β
Since 2006, the online schoolβs charity umbrella βAshworth Causesβ has included faculty and staff in community service projects and charity drives benefiting organizations like American Red Cross Disaster Relief, Angel Tree, Atlanta Community Food Bank, Childrenβs Miracle Network, Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving among others.
