Graduation Rates for Meadowcreek, Norcross Increase

The Georgia Department of Education released the 2012 graduation rates recently. Norcross High's rate increased by more than 5 percentage points while Meadowcreek's increased by 0.7 percent.

Gwinnett County and Norcross schools are doing better in terms of graduating students.

Gwinnett's graduation rate increased more than three percentage points -- from 67.56 in 2011 to 70.98 percent in 2012, according to data released this week from the state Department of Education.

Both Gwinnett high schools in Norcross have higher rates, too. In 2011, Norcross High had a graduation rate of 65.54 percent, and in 2012 the rate increased to 70.8 percent. For Meadowcreek High, the 2011 rate increased from 48.54 to 49.24 percent for 2012.

These schools have helped the Gwinnett County beat the state average, too. Georgia's rate increased from 67.44 percent in 2011 to 69.72 percent in 2012.

This marks the second year that Georgia has used an adjusted cohort rate to determine graduation rates. Currently, the state uses a four-year method, which tracks the number of students who graduate in that time frame.Β

It also includes adjustments for student transfers. The calculation is based on federal standards that allow all states to equally compare graduation rates across the nation.

Rates of neighboring districts, include: Barrow County at 67.95 percent, DeKalb County at 57.28 percent, Forsyth at 87.78, Fulton at 71.34 percent, Hall County at 74.43 percent and Walton County at 74.2 percent.

The school that made the most gain over the previous year is Mountain View High, which increased 11.53 percentage points over its 2011 rate.
