But what should kindergartners know by the first day of school? From following directions to working independently to academic skills, it's a popular question that pops up this time of the year.
"As parents plan for kindergarten enrollment, it's important to remember that while many schools accept students based on age, a child's readiness really relies on social, emotional, motor and language development," said Dr. Sugantha Moorthy, Kumon of Alpharetta – Holcomb Bridge Center Director. "The habits and attitudes with which children approach learning are important factors when it comes to school success.
When asked to identify factors associated with challenging transitions to school, Kindergarten teachers most frequently mentioned difficulty in following directions, working independently and lack of academic skills.

Here's list of skills that are sure to get your children off to a strong start once they enter kindergarten:
Attention & Following Directions

• Focus on activity for 15 min.
• Independently complete a task before starting another
• Follow two-step directions
• Respond to their first and last name

Social Development

• Take turns and share
• Regulate emotions and appropriately express feelings
• Interact well with other children
• Use 5 to 6 word sentences

Language Arts & Writing

• Recite the alphabet
• Recognize upper and lower-case letters
• Identify letters out of context
• Know some letter sounds

Number Recognition & Counting

• Recognize numbers up to 20
• Hold a pencil correctly
• Count in sequence up to 20
• Identify shapes and patterns

Motor Skills

• Properly use scissors
• Count, sort and put objects in order
• Trace lines and write some letters and numbers
• Write the letters in their name
