Avondale Estates, GA — This fall, Avondale Estates—known for its charming Tudor Revival architecture and inspired by Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare—will serve as the ideal host city for A Shakespeare Happening | Avondale Estates Town Green. Debuting in September, the event marks the first time a free civic Shakespeare series has been held in DeKalb County—and a cultural first for Avondale Estates.

Produced by Bard x Sage PR in partnership with the Atlanta Shakespeare Company, DeKalb County Commissioner Ted Terry (Super District 6), and the City of Avondale Estates, the series invites neighbors and families of all ages to enjoy world-class theatre, live music, and enriching children’s programming—all outdoors and free to the public.

Nicole Sage, a longtime DeKalb County resident and founder of Sage PR Consulting, developed the initiative under her creative moniker, Bard x Sage PR. She pitched the concept to Commissioner Terry to bring accessible cultural programming and educational enrichment to Dekalb. “My mother took me to the Shakespeare Tavern several times when I was in high school. She was a diehard champion of Artistic Director Jeff Watkins. Watching his Shakespeare performances with my mother is a memory I will cherish forever. Commissioner Terry and I wanted to create something welcoming for all,” said Sage. “Whether it’s your first Shakespeare play or your fiftieth, this is a space where families and children can experience the magic of Shakespeare together—outside and for free.”

By partnering with the Atlanta Shakespeare Company, the team has created a fall series that brings Shakespeare to life—all under the Georgia sky. “Bringing Shakespeare to the Town Green is about more than theatre—it’s about building community and ensuring that art and culture are accessible to everyone, regardless of zip code or income,” said Commissioner Ted Terry. “I’m proud to support initiatives like this that uplift our shared spaces, celebrate creativity, and offer meaningful enrichment for families across DeKalb.”

Of course, all the world is a stage, but what would it be without its players? The Atlanta Shakespeare Company joined the effort, with leadership embracing the opportunity to meet audiences outdoors. Kati Grace Kirby the Associate Managing Director of the Atlanta Shakespeare Company, along with Artistic Director, Jeff Watkins and Associate Artistic Director, Andrew Houchins, were positioned to make this Shakespeare happening happen serendipitously.

"I am thrilled to be coordinating the Atlanta Shakespeare Company partnership to provide entertainment and educational opportunities outdoors at the Avondale Estates Town Green. As the ASC moves into its newest chapter, it is one of our highest priorities to meet our audiences- and potential future audience members- where they are. I am so grateful to the people of Avondale Estates for hosting us and to Nicole Sage for bringing this tremendous opportunity for collaboration to my attention. Shakespeare is, and should be, for anyone and everyone who wants it! I look forward to being in community with arts lovers of all ages on the Town Green this Fall.”

“The City of Avondale Estates is proud to host this free, family-friendly Shakespeare production at the Town Green, a fun nod to our Stratford-on-Avon roots," said City Manager Patrick Bryant. "It’s a unique cultural experience not offered anywhere else in metro Atlanta.”
