Suspect Killed In Gwinnett Police Shooting ID'ed

Police say after a suspect hit a patrol car and prompted a chase, a police shooting killed the person in Gwinnett County.

PEACHTREE CORNERS, GA — Authorities have identified the man who died in a police shooting after being accused of hitting a patrol vehicle and pointing a gun at officers during a chase Tuesday night in Peachtree Corners.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday said the police shooting killed Brent Elvin Ivy, 39, of Dacula, whose vehicle was the subject of a be on the lookout issued by Roswell Police.

Gwinnett County Police on Wednesday said officers responded around 11:30 p.m. to the 5700 block of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard on a call about a vehicle that was involved in an incident in another jurisdiction.

Ivy was accused of then ramming the patrol car used to block his vehicle, causing it become inoperable, and fleeing the area, police said. Officers then found the vehicle, and a chase began, police said.

Ivy's vehicle crashed, and he got out of his vehicle and ran, police said. Officers started chasing Ivy, again, and he ignored verbal commands, police said.

An officer tried deploying a taser but was unsuccessful, police said. Ivy was then accused of pulling out a handgun, and police said the officer shot Ivy.

When Ivy went down to the ground, police said he turned and pointed the gun at officers. Officers fired additional shots at Ivy, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers were not injured during the deadly incident, police said.

Ivy’s body will be taken to the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy will be conducted, the GBI said.
