Here are the top three stories today in Savannah:
- Residents at the Sustainable Fellwood III Apartments are speaking out after several residents have been without working air conditioning. Around 10 residents are reportedly without reliable cooling, despite residents' attempts to contact the apartment's management and the Savannah Housing Authority. Many of the apartment's residents are elderly and may have health conditions that can be exacerbated by the recent heat. Resident Leon Maynor has chronic COPD and says he has been without air conditioning for two months. In a statement, the building's owners said they are not aware of reports regarding malfunctioning air conditioning. (WSAV)
- Chatham County has seen a decrease in the number of Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers over the past year, and Brightside Child & Family Advocacy is seeking to encourage more residents to sign up for this role. CASA volunteers provide children in foster care with support and continuity of care as they transition into their new homes from the foster care system. This year, 31 children have been placed in the foster care system in Chatham County, but there have only been 17 new CASA volunteers. To learn more about becoming a CASA volunteer, click here. - A new book designed to support grieving parents will debut in Savannah on Friday, Aug. 11 at the Clyde Venue at an event from 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. Compiled by Jimmy DeLoach Jr., the book is titled “A Journey We Share: A Healing Path for Parents Who Grieve.” The 237-page book aims to help grieving parents with art, journal pages, and stories of people who have endured similar tragedies. The book's forward was written by Savannah's 66th mayor Eddie Deloach. (Savannah CEO)
