Here are the top three stories today in Savannah:

  1. In October 2022, Savannah Police responded to a hit-and-run on Ogeechee Road. Mya Lewis, 20, was found at the scene and died at the hospital from her injuries. On Monday this week, 21-year-old Jamesha Johnson turned herself in to the Savannah Police Department admitting to the crime. She has been arrested and charged with hit and run resulting in serious injury or death. (WTOC)
  2. Over the weekend, Savannah Alderwoman Bernetta Lanier announced that she will be running for re-election. Lanier joined Savannah's City Council in 2019. She will be running to fill the city's district one seat and announced the news at Waterworks Plaza. Election Day is on Nov. 7 and there are multiple council members who have announced they are running for re-election. (WTOC)
  3. The Chatham County Commissioners voted Friday to remove the controversial $100 flat fire fee. The fire fee included the $100 flat fee and a separate fee charged based on the square footage of the property. Now, residents will be charged 14 cents per square foot for fire services. The new fees will begin on Jul. 1. (WSAV)
