"During the summer months, Savannah locals and travelers alike flock to neighboring Tybee Island, a small barrier island renowned for its beaches, historic lighthouse, bangin’ seafood and bird watching. Come fall, the area’s signature marsh grasses are turning vibrant colors, but temperatures remain in the mid-70s to low-80s so a beach day isn’t out of the question. Tybee is a beautiful location for shoulder season travel—perfect for long beach strolls and afternoons spent fishing on the pier or by boat while exploring its creeks and marshes.

Make sure to factor in time to spend in Savannah proper, too, as it transforms for spooky season. The city’s historic streets and centuries-old buildings take on a magical, haunting vibe, especially when shrouded in the misty mornings or under the glow of street lamps at night. Known as one of the most haunted cities in America, it’s the perfect location for a fall ghost tour. The cooler weather also makes it ideal to explore spots like Bonaventure Cemetery, Wormsloe Plantation Historic Site known for its iconic oak tree-lined lane, or the beautiful Forsyth Park."

Other sites Thrillist said may be good for fall are Montauk, New York; Yellowstone National Park; Newport Beach, California; Chatham, Massachusetts; Vail, Colorado; Portland, Maine; Shelter Island, New York; Anna Maria Island, Florida; Kiawah Island, South Carolina; Assateague Island and Newport, Rhode Island.
