Here are the top three stories today in Savannah:
- Applications are now open for the upcoming session of Step Up Savannah's Neighborhood Leadership Academy. This program will run for 12 weeks beginning on Sep. 11, 2023 and will provide emerging community leaders with leadership training that emphasizes advocacy, problem-solving, and critical thinking. During the program, attendees will focus on a group project that focuses on a local concern, such as homelessness or transit justice. Former program participants have served on city councils, county commissions, and statewide initiatives. (Savannah CEO)
- The Chatham County Fire Department is alerting the public about the dangers of lightning strikes after lightning caused two recent house fires in the area. Captain Carl Sapp explained that the temperature of a lightning strike when it hits a house is about 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit. However, Sapp said that lightning damage isn't always visible from the outside of the structure due to lightning's ability to damage electronics. He recommended residents be alert for power surges and the smell of burning plastic, and to not hesitate to call the fire department if lightning damage is suspected. (WTOC)
- Hyundai and St. Joseph's/Candler have announced a partnership that will bring a new medical center to the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America EV Plant in nearby Bryan County. The facility will provide primary care and occupational health services to employees. It will also provide chronic disease management, physical therapy, and diagnostic services. The 7,700 square-foot facility is set to open in May 2024. (WTOC)
