Here are the top three stories in Savannah today:
- Expansion plans for the Port of Savannah are moving ahead. Even though cargo volume is lower than normal, officials with the Georgia Ports Authority said that presents an ideal opportunity to push forward with an expansion plan of almost $2 billion. The expansion project for Container Berth One is nearly complete, and this will increase capacity at the port by 1.5 million containers. The improvements will enable workers to serve seven ships at the same time. (Transport Topics)
- In case you missed it, the Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education held a town hall meeting earlier this week to discuss progress on the efforts to combine Mercer Middle School, Gould Elementary School, and Grove High School. Meeting attendees were anxious to know when the construction of the new 40,000-square-foot campus will be complete. Officials said that due to weather delays, the new school facility will not be completed in time for the upcoming school year, and students will continue to attend classes at temporary locations. Currently, the project is expected to be completed by October. (WTOC)
- Now that school is out for the summer, there are several summer camps in Savannah for kids to stay busy over the break. Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools offers several different camps, including Culinary Academy and STEAM Dream camps. The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society has an upcoming camp for children with Down syndrome, and the nearby City of Port Wentworth has several upcoming athletic camps. (Savannah Morning News)
