Here are the top three stories in Savannah today:
- Savannah residents may be facing a 10 percent increase in property taxes. The Board of Public Education for the City of Savannah and the County of Chatham has adopted a tentative 2023 millage rate that would necessitate the increase. The tentative increase brings the millage rate to 17.631 mills, up from 16.028. The potential property tax increase would increase taxes on a $250,000 home by $157.09 per year. (Savannah Tribune)
- The City of Savannah is expecting to see around $7.8 million from increased property tax revenue, and city officials are debating whether to use that windfall on a tax rollback for residents or to fund infrastructure improvements to address flooding. Alderman Nick Palumbo is in favor of addressing flooding issues, and Mayor Van Johnson agreed, saying that the cost to fix flooding inside a home is much higher than what residents would receive in a one-time tax rollback. (WJCL)
- The Plant Riverside District has announced that it will be hosting Retro Rewind: Sunday Movies at District Live, which will feature movies such as Frozen and Toy Story. This event will run from Jul. 9 through Sep. 3, and the movie for each date will begin at 4:00 p.m. There will be soft drinks and snacks for sale, as well as wine and a full bar for adults. Children are encouraged to bring pillows or blankets to sit on. (Savannah CEO)
