Here are the top three stories in Smyrna-Vinings today:
- Cobb County police have used DNA forensic testing to solve a 51-year-old cold case involving the rape and murder of nine-year-old Debbie Lynn Randall in nearby Marietta. Randall was abducted, raped, and murdered in 1972, with her body found 16 days later. Genetic genealogy provided answers, identifying the suspect as William B. Rose, a Mableton resident who committed suicide two years after the crime. Investigators believe it was a "crime of opportunity" as Rose had no known connection to Randall, providing some closure for her family after years of searching for answers. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
- The Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by honoring 50 influential Latinos and Hispanics who have made a lasting impact in the state. Among the honorees was Paola Suro, a news anchor from 11Alive, recognized for her work in representing Latinos in media, bridging language barriers in broadcasting, debunking health-related myths, and supporting local Latino nonprofits. The chamber praised these individuals for enriching Georgia's economic and social fabric through their dedication and accomplishments. (11 Alive)
- Authorities are seeking the public's assistance in locating a suspect, 16-year-old Christopher Mcmutry, for a homicide case. The incident occurred on Jul. 30, at the Stratford Ridge Apartments on Delk Road, where officers responded to a person shot. While 17-year-old Jacob Coggins has been arrested and charged, Christopher Mcmutry remains at large, and community members are encouraged to provide any information, regardless of its significance, to aid in his apprehension by contacting the Cobb County Police Tip Hotline at 770-499-4111.
