Here are the top three stories in Smyrna-Vinings today:

  1. To honor the brave firefighters and paramedics who lost their lives on Sep. 11, 2001, on Sunday, the Marietta Fire Department and metro Atlanta residents took part in the department's annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb fundraiser. The 110-story climb pays homage to the stairs the firefighters climbed inside the World Trade Center buildings. All the proceeds from this fundraiser event were donated to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the Marietta Firefighter Support Fund. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
  2. A new exhibition opened yesterday at the David J. Sencer CDC Museum in nearby Atlanta, focusing on the lingering health effects for people who were present during the catastrophic terrorist attack on 9/11. The exhibition will raise awareness about the physical and mental health conditions 9/11 survivors face, from exposure to traumatic events as well as debris, dust, and smoke caused by the fall of the twin towers. According to CDC data, 900 Georgia residents are currently being monitored or treated through the WTC Health Program, which provides 9/11 responders and survivors with free treatment of conditions related to the event. ( The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
  3. Cobb County's DUI Court will celebrate its fifteenth year of operation next week, honoring all those offenders who are currently in recovery. The DUI Court was created to help multiple-offense candidates by reducing incarceration time and enrolling them in a mandatory 24-month rigorous recovery program. The anniversary ceremony will take place on Tuesday, Sep. 19, at the Historic Strand Theatre on the Square down the road in Marietta, and several graduates are expected to take part in the event.
