Here are the top three stories in Smyrna-Vinings today:

  1. A lawsuit filed last year against the Cobb County School Board alleged that the board used "racial demographic information" to group voters of color into Districts 2, 3, and 6, which diminishes the voting power of those individuals. The lawsuit has been approved to move forward on the grounds that it is in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and is racially discriminatory. Voting rights organizations claimed the maps would harmfully distribute voting power over the next 10 years, at which time they would be redrawing the maps. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  2. Cobb County is hosting events all summer for residents to attend! Cobb PARKS is hosting a Fishing Rodeo at Furr Family Park on Jul. 29; the Cobb County Police Department is hosting the annual National Night Out on Aug. 1 at Jim. R. Miller Park and Event Center in Marietta; and there will be a "We Care Veterans Fair" at the Cobb County Civic Center on Aug. 4-5. Additional events include a 5K, Wine Down Wednesdays, and an International Festival; all information can be found at the link. (Cobb County Government)
  3. Smyrna Little League, who has won the past two years, went head-to-head with the Harris County 12-and-under all-star team on Thursday night, Jul. 20, for the Georgia state championship. During the third inning, Smyrna tied up the game, though Harris County took back the reins in the next inning, resulting in their eventual win (4-2). Harris County will play again in the double-elimination Southeast Regional tournament in the coming week. (Yahoo!)
