Death Of Woman Whose Body Was Found In Cobb Fire Probed As Homicide

Detectives and arson investigators were called to the scene after a woman was found dead during a fire at a Cobb County apartment.

SMYRNA, GA — Police said the death of a woman is being investigated as a homicide after she was found dead Wednesday during an apartment fire in Smyrna.

The fire happened around 4:15 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 800 block of Windy Hill Road, Smyrna Fire officials said. Firefighters found the woman dead while responding to the blaze, they said.

Authorities responded to the incident after being notified of the fire by a 911 caller stating they heard a fire alarm and saw smoke coming from the apartment below where they lived, Smyrna Police said.

First responders then evacuated the building before the deceased woman was found, police said. She was not identified, and an official cause of death was not revealed.

Fire officials said criminal activity was suspected, but they did not release further details on the matter. However, police said detectives and arson investigators conducted an on-scene probe.

A single apartment was damaged from the blaze, but no residents were displaced, fire officials said. Police said the homicide investigation is ongoing.

Smyrna Police and the Smyrna Fire Marshall's Office are investigating the fatal incident.
