Here are the top three stories today in Smyrna-Vinings:

  1. A man was fatally struck by a car in Cobb County around 9:12 p.m. on Monday at the intersection of Austell Road and Favor Road. The pedestrian, Itanor Duval, 76, was hit by a southbound car while crossing north outside the sidewalk. Despite being critically injured, he was taken to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. The incident is under investigation by Cobb County Police, who encourage anyone with information to contact them at 770-499-3987. (11 Alive)
  2. High school students still interested in applying for the 2023-2024 Smyrna Youth Council have until Aug. 25 to apply. The Smyrna Youth Council aims to engage high school students in government processes, address youth needs, and develop leadership skills. It offers participants opportunities to learn about local government structures, voice community concerns to Smyrna City Council, and contribute to city and community events.   3. A convicted sex offender is accused of placing hidden cameras in various rooms of a Cobb County rental property. The victim, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed shock upon discovering the cameras, revealing that she sensed something was wrong. The victim found the cameras after relocating to the basement of the property, where she noticed an outlet that seemed improperly placed, ultimately leading to the discovery. The landlord, identified as William Randall Bryan, was previously convicted as a sex offender, and police uncovered his involvement along with Paula Sponsel in setting up the cameras. (WSB-TV)

  • Smyrna Parks and Recreation is hosting a Fall-Themed Cookie Decorating Class for children aged 5-12. This class, held on Sep. 16 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Smyrna Community Center, offers kids the chance to decorate fall-themed cookies and receive an introductory lesson in cookie decorating.   • Keep Smyrna Beautiful is organizing a document shredding event at the Aline Wolfe Recreatiom Center (884 Church St.) on Sep. 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The event is open to everyone, regardless of residency, and offers free document shredding services.
