Here are the top three stories in Smyrna-Vinings today:
- Two tragic incidents involving children accessing loaded guns have occurred in metro Atlanta within two days. On Monday, a 7-year-old boy died after being shot at a DeKalb County gas station, resulting in his father's arrest on charges of second-degree murder and child cruelty. On Tuesday, a child under two years old fatally shot herself with a gun found in a Cobb County home, leading to the arrest of Conrad Carrington Clark on charges of involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct, and possession of a firearm by a felon. These incidents highlight the serious issue of child access to firearms, with charges varying for gun owners in such cases, as revealed in a 2022 report by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. - A traffic shift in Smyrna on Windy Hill Boulevard opened to traffic on Thursday, Sep. 7. For two weeks advance warning signs have been in place, and the bridges on Windy Hill Road are now open. This traffic shift will replace crossovers at Ward Street, Beaver Creek Road, and San Fernando Drive/Burbank Circle, with the crossover at Old Spring Road remaining open temporarily but closing later in the construction period. - Down the road, Cobb's Emergency Management Agency is offering free training for Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members throughout September, October, and November. The 24-hour instruction aims to prepare volunteers for crisis situations, and once trained, they will have opportunities to assist the community. The training will occur on three consecutive Saturdays during each of these months, covering different topics, and participants must complete all three classes. More information and registration details can be found here. (Subscription: Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
