Thank you Congress passing Budget
Congress has passed and the President has signed the Labor-HHS appropriation package for FY2020 Budget. This package contains the $350 million research funding request from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as well as $10 million funding for the first year Implementation of the BOLD Act for Alzheimer's.
We thank them for their bipartisan efforts to move research in Alzheimer's and related dementias pass the $2.8 billion level since 2011. Brain research is difficult and expensive yet the cost of caring for Alzheimer's patients and related dementias will be $290 Billion in 2019 with the expected cost of $49 Billion in 2019 to Medicare and Medicaid services alone. Included in this funding is research in Molecular Pathology, Diagnosis and assessment, Clinical Interventions, Epidemiology and Improving support for Caregivers.
The first milestone set forth in the National Alzheimer's Project Act (NAPA) passed in 2011 is an effective treatment by 2025. The NIH advises this is possible with adequate funding levels.
The Alzheimer's Association and its advocacy organization Alzheimer's Impact Movement (AIM) thank Congress for their bipartisan support to meeting this milestone.
I Thank Congressman David Scott of Georgia's 13th District for his leadership and support to reach a world without Alzheimer's.
