Here are the top three stories today in Smyrna-Vinings:
- A Kennesaw State University research team and Cobb County Police, Fire, ambulance services, Crisis Intervention Team, and commissioners are working together to create a new 911 response for calls about people in emotional distress. One of the main priorities is to create an interactive dashboard that 911 operators can use to direct the correct responders to mental health calls. Once the team gets the full response set up for Cobb County, it plans to expand to local city police and fire departments within the county. (Metro Atlanta CEO)
- A Smyrna child who was kidnapped two years ago by a non-custodial parent and taken to a foreign country was recently reunited with her father. The Smyrna Police Department helped reunite the two with aid from new investigative technologies and interagency cooperation between the U.S. Marshals Service, Cobb County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and law enforcement authorities in Mexico. (Smyrna Police Department via Facebook)
- The City of Smyrna hosted its first state-required public hearing on the proposed tax increase yesterday, Jul. 17. The public hearing was centered around the city's adoption of a tentative millage rate that will result in a 14.83 percent property tax increase. If you missed yesterday's public hearing, you can join one of the next two on Jul. 25 at 10:00 a.m. at 200 Village Green Circle SE, or on Jul. 25 at 5:30 p.m. at 2800 King St. SE.
