Cumberland CID to Give $5M to I-285 Pedestrian Bridge

Cumberland CID board members hope the infusion of cash will help ensure the pedestrian bridge is ready in time for Opening Day 2017.

SMYRNA-VININGS, GA -- The Cumberland Community Improvement District (CID) has voted to provide $5 million in funding for the planned pedestrian bridge over Interstate 285 that will bring fans to and from the Atlanta Braves’ Cobb County stadium, according to a report.

Although the CID’s funding will come in two $2.5 million payments in 2018 and 2019, board chair Tad Leithead told the Marietta Daily Journal he hopes the infusion will help get the bridge done by Opening Day 2017, when SunTrust Park will officially become the new home of the Braves.

Board members Barry Teague and Connie Engel opposed the plan, with Teague telling the MDJ he felt the CID had given enough money to the project. Engel said she didn’t think it was wise to fund the project without having more information, like a final cost estimate or a timetable for completion.
