Here are the top three stories today in Smyrna-Vinings:

  1. Submissions are now open for the 14th annual WaterSmart WaterArt Middle School Calendar Contest. Middle school students who are enrolled in Cobb County or City of Marietta school districts have until Friday, Oct. 13 to submit an original piece of artwork on the theme, "How water is important to me." Students should include a 50-word statement explaining how their art explores the given theme. Twelve winners will have their art included in the 2024 WaterSmart calendar, and other selected artwork will be featured online. To learn more, email sarah.dunn@cobbcounty.org. (Cobb County Government via Facebook)
  2. Tables are now available for Smyrna residents to purchase for the 151st Smyrna Birthday Celebration. Table reservations will open for non-Smyrna residents this evening (Aug. 24) at 6:00 p.m. This event will feature a concert by the Goo Goo Dolls and The Wallflowers. Tables seat six people, and each household is limited to one table reservation at a cost of $120.00. (City of Smyrna, GA Government via Facebook)
  3. As part of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, hundreds of striking local actors, writers, and labor unions demonstrated on Tuesday night down the road in Atlanta as part of the National Day of Solidarity. The writer's union has been on strike for 112 days, and the actor's union has been on strike for 40 days to continue the fight for pay increases and protection from the use of Artificial Intelligence. The strikes could continue for weeks, if not months, as union reps continue to meet with studios over their contracts. (WSB-TV)
