Here are the top three stories in Smyrna-Vinings today:

1. The Vinings Down Hill 5K Run for the Kids, hosted by the Rotary Club of Vinings Cumberland, is taking place this Saturday, Aug. 12, and registration is still open! The event also features a Kids 1K Fun Run, a Doggie Dash, and Costume Contest, as well as a Vinings Jubilee race party with awards, food, and more. Parking is at Overlook I at 2849 Paces Ferry Rd. SE in Atlanta, and the race begins at 8:00 a.m. (Rotary Club of Vinings Cumberland via Facebook)
2. Free adult learning classes have started this week at the Cliff Jordan Continuing Education Center at Tillman House in Smyrna. Classes include English as a Second Language (with three basic levels), Family Gardening, Bible Study, Financial Basics, and Spanish Cooking Demonstrations. 3. Registration is open for the Sep. 25-29 Fall Break Arts and Crafts Camp. At the camp, children ages 5-12 will learn about different art mediums and explore being an artist. • Get ready to buy new spirit wear for the 2023/2024 school year and hear PTA updates at the Smyrna Elementary Open House on Thurs., Aug. 10 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. If you need to join the PTA or renew your membership, you can do either online. (Smyrna Elementary PTA via Facebook)
• Smyrna will see the new mobile breast ultrasound screening company, HerScan, starting on Aug. 16. HerScan uses ultrasound technology to offer breast scans that significantly increase the chances of detecting breast cancer. The screening includes a scan of both breasts with the axilla, plus a reading from the radiologist, which costs $285 with no prescription needed. (Smyrna-Vinings Patch)
