Here are the top three stories today in Smyrna-Vinings:
- Cobb County's Gritters Library will be closing on Jun. 17 at 5:00 p.m. as part of the preparation for the facility's new building. Materials will be removed from the library to be held at the Mountain View Regional Library while construction is ongoing. The new facility, comprising the Gritters Library and a community center, will be constructed at a cost of $9.8 million. The project will be funded through the county's Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), grants, and the county's fund balance, with Batson-Cook Construction serving as the design-build contractor. (Cobb County Courier)
- Gas prices have decreased by a cent from what they were a week ago — now averaging $3.25 a gallon throughout Georgia. AAA-The Auto Club spokeswoman Montrae Waiters attributed the decrease to a decline in demand and the low cost of oil. In Cobb County, the price of a gallon of regular unleaded averages $3.272. (Cobb County Courier)
- The Smyrna Youth Council concluded the 2022-2023 program, giving a Year in Review presentation to the mayor and council at the Committee of the Whole meeting on May 11. Applications for next year's Youth Council program will be available beginning in August. Eligibility requirements and additional information are available at the link! From my notebook:
- Friends of Smyrna Library extended a thank you to shoppers and volunteers who helped the 2023 Spring Book Sale go off without a hitch! The Book Sale ended on Sunday and was a big success, with proceeds being used to fund additions to the Smyrna Public Library, one of which will be shelf-finding aids to make it easier for patrons to find books. (Friends of Smyrna Library via Facebook)
- The Fuller Center of Greater Atlanta is announcing the addition of two new members: Liza Defilippo, as Treasurer, and Bill Kolbrener, as Vice President of Construction. (The Fuller Center of Greater Atlanta via Facebook)
- Hollybourne Cottage, part of the historic site on Jekyll Island, is still undergoing renovations, and is slated to be turned into a venue space when complete, with portions of the building set aside for historical significance to the Maurice family, the builders. Hollybourne and the site it's located on were once part of the Jekyll Island Club, an 1890s-era winter retreat for the rich and powerful. More information about the Cottage can be found here.
