Here are the top three stories today in Smyrna-Vinings:

  1. The Cobb County Department of Transportation director, Drew Raessler, presented scenarios to the Board of Commissioners about the benefits of passing a Mobility Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. This tax, which could last up to 30 years, aims to improve commuting by potentially shortening daily travel times and encouraging reduced car usage. The commissioners expressed differing opinions on the tax duration and project types, with Raessler emphasizing the importance of public engagement to finalize the project list before board submission. (Cobb County, Georgia)
  2. The Cobb Chamber is currently accepting nominations for the 2023 Citizen of the Year Awards, an initiative co-sponsored by Cobb County civic clubs, business associations, and Area Councils. These annual awards recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the improvement of Cobb County. Nominations are being accepted from nine local areas within Cobb County, including Smyrna, and the honorees are selected for their outstanding and definable contributions that have positively impacted their communities. The nomination period is open until Sep. 29, and nominations can be submitted here. (Cobb County Courier)
  3. On Aug. 20 at around 05:27 a.m., a single-car crash occurred at the intersection of Nickajack Road and Gambrell Road in Cobb County. The car was traveling west on Nickajack Road and exited the road for unknown reasons, striking multiple trees after going through a drainage ditch. The driver sustained serious injuries and was taken to the nearby Wellstar Kennestone Hospital by ambulance. The Cobb County Police Department's Selective Traffic Enforcement Program is investigating the crash and requests anyone with information to contact them at (770) 499-3987. (Cobb County Courier)
