Now, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and very hot. High: 97 Low: 74.

Here are the top three stories in Smyrna-Vinings today:

  1. Yesterday, Six Flags announced that a new, groundbreaking roller coaster will open at the Cobb County amusement park next year. The roller coaster, which has yet to be named, will be a "surf coaster" featuring free-spinning seats in two outward-facing circles, engineered so that no two ride experiences will be the same. The public will have the opportunity to contribute their suggestions for naming the new ride, which will be located in the ScreamPunk area of the park. (WSB Atlanta)
  2. On Sunday, the City of Smyrna announced details for its third-annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration. Scheduled this year for Sep.23, the free event will engage locals and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with fun activities for the whole family, including live performances, food and drink vendors, a movie night, and more. The event will take place in the newly redesigned Village Green Park downtown — click the link to learn more. (Cobb County Courier)
  3. On Friday, a 17-year-old North Cobb High School student was shot during an altercation following a high school football game. The shooting occurred late Friday evening in a business plaza parking lot across the street from NCHS — when authorities arrived, they found a 17-year-old who was shot in the leg. The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the authorities have yet to reveal the suspect's identity as school district officials continue to investigate the incident. • The Smyrna Recycling Center welcomed a dozen participants for its recent monthly tour. The recycling center offers tours on the third Friday of each month at 9:00 a.m., and you can click here to reserve your spot. (Keep Smyrna Beautiful via Facebook)
  • Mark your calendars for a good cause: Highland Rivers Behavioral Health will host a free community symposium on veteran suicide prevention on Wednesday, Sep. 13. The event is open to veterans and their family members who want to learn more about suicide prevention and resources for supporting veterans. (Cobb County Courier)
