Here are the top three stories today in Smyrna-Vinings:
- On Monday, the Smyrna City Council voted on the approval of a proposed design by North Carolina artists David Wilson, Stephen Hayes, and Michael Gonzales for a memorial honoring Fanny Williams, a local African American woman recognized for her legacy of activism and social justice. The design, termed "Testimony of Redemption," will consist of a life-sized statue of Williams holding a shovel, positioned before a curved wall depicting Atlanta’s Wheat Street Baptist Church and costing an estimated $125,000. - According to AAA's weekly gas and oil report, the prices of standard unleaded gas in Georgia have increased by three cents from last week. The gas price per gallon in Cobb Country specifically is $3.289, which is one cent more than the state average. Research shows that there is a lot of summer travel currently, especially with kids being out of school, so there is a high demand for gas, resulting in price rises. (Cobb County Courier)
- The 2022 North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church faced critical moments as a vote on the disaffiliation of 70 churches drew major attention. However, amid the controversy, the plight of the Red Oak United Methodist Church, a small historically Black congregation, sparked a heated conversation on racial injustices within the denomination, prompting reparative measures. Consequently, four key resolutions were passed, including granting the proceeds from the sale of Red Oak's property to another Black congregation of their choosing, promoting legacy mergers, and implementing intercultural training programs, ultimately aiming to address and rectify racial inequalities within the Church.
