Here are the top three stories today in Smyrna-Vinings:

  1. Cobb County police have arrested 18-year-old Vanessa Robinson in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident at the Cumberland Mall, near the Smyrna-Vinings area. On Sunday, 25-year-old Paige Jenkins was struck by a Nissan Sentra allegedly driven by Robinson. Jenkins was rushed to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital but succumbed to her injuries. Authorities have categorized the incident as intentional; Robinson is now charged with murder in the commission of a felony and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. (WSB Atlanta)
  2. Yesterday (Tuesday, Jul. 18), Georgia issued a Code Orange Alert for the Atlanta metro and north Georgia due to lingering smoke from Canadian wildfires. The alert signifies that the air quality index (AQI) ranges from 101 to 150, posing potential health risks for vulnerable populations. The air quality is expected to improve today (Wednesday, Jul. 19), when predicted rainfall could provide relief from the poor air conditions. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
  3. Young bakers-slash-ocean enthusiasts are invited to Smyrna Parks and Recreation's "Under the Sea" Kids' Cookie Decorating Class. Children aged 5-12 can learn cookie decorating techniques and take home their aquatic-themed tasty treats. The class is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 12 from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Smyrna Community Center's Tulip Room. (City of Smyrna, GA Government via Facebook)
