“I’m going to open it up as Barnes. We’ll carry the same things, just a different owner,” said Fuller.

Fuller said his store needed the space to expand, and will use the Barnes Store, often referred to as the “upper store,” to sell lawnmowers and power equipment.

Currently, Barnes Store sells local honey, cheeses, peanuts, feed and seed, clothes and boots, dog food and dog products and housewares not found in “big-box” stores, Fuller said. All these items will now be sold in the Barnes Hardware building.

After hearing about Barnes Hardware closing, many residents thought Barnes Store had closed as well. The two stores, though next door to each other and selling many of the same items, were separate businesses with different owners.

Betty Barnes, Barnes Hardware’s former owner, starting working in the business with her late husband, Benson Barnes in 1954. Benson Barnes is the first cousin of former Gov. Roy Barnes, a native of Mableton.

Six years ago, Fuller bought Barnes Store from Ray Barnes, Roy Barnes’ brother, after working for 14 years at the Carrollton location.

The store will hold its grand re-opening in about a month, Fuller said, adding that the event will be a community affair, complete with door prizes from vendors and a cookout for customers.

“It’s cool to be the one that got it and to keep it going in tradition. These stores are a dying breed,” Fuller said. “It’s nice to get customer service.”

Until the grand re-opening, the Barnes Store will continue to sell hardware, along with other home improvement items. The store hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
