Obituaries of people who lived in or were from South Cobb

Dorothy "Dot" Wiggins Deeter, age 89 of Mableton, passed away on Monday, Jan. 16 while living at Delmar Gardens in Smyrna with her many friends.

She was born in Atlanta on Aug. 21, 1922 to Robert Alexander Wiggins and Annie Harvey Wiggins.
She was a proud Atlanta native and graduated from Commercial High School in Atlanta as well as Draughon's Business College. She willingly served our country in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. Her almost 30-year civil service career included work at the U.S. Treasury, the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Defense Contract Administration. Over the last 25 years, she took great pleasure in her church, Westside Baptist in Mableton. In addition to being known as a generous person, she loved the hobby of crocheting.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Derwin Deeter, in 1989. Survivors include her son, David Deeter and his wife, Cantey, of Atlanta; daughters, Phyllis Barber of Temple and Sue and her husband, Jim Beynon, of Villa Rica; brother, Richard Wiggins and his wife, Marth,a of Duluth and many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21 at White Columns Chapel in Mableton with a graveside service at 3:30 p.m. with Dr. A.T. Stewart officiating at Mt. Harmony Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, you can make donations to Westside Baptist Church in Mableton or to Whitefield Academy.

Joe Preston Worley, age 84 of Mableton, passed away on Jan. 13.

He was a WWII veteran serving in the Army Air Corp. He retired from Ziegler Tool Company and was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church. He was an avid trout fisherman and gardener.

Preceded in death by his wife, Mardell Westbrook Worley, he is survived by his children, Alan Joel and Janet Worley of Douglasville, Kay Ann Siniard of Dallas, April Elizabeth and Steve Sikes of Powder Springs; grandchildren; Karen Worley Davis, Jill Worley, Kevin Worley, Tyler Siniard, Melanie Siniard and Brad Sikes; great grandchildren; Hannah Davis, Sasha Worley and Fallon Worley; brother, Clifton Worley of Marietta and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 16  at the Davis-Struempf Chapel with Dr. Randal Whitten officiating. Interment was at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wellstar Community Hospice “Tranquility”, 4040 Hospital Drive, Austell, GA 30106.

E.B. Harris, age 93, of Mableton passed away on the morning of Jan. 8 at his home. He was born to Oscar and Mary Harris on June 7, 1918 in Harlan, KY. After graduating from high school, he worked as a telephone and telegraph groundman until joining the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942 at Fort Oglethorpe, GA. He served as an Aerial Gunner during WWII and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant when he was honorably discharged in Scott Field, IL. During his service to our country, he received four bronze stars and an air medal.

He was a beloved member of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints and had served for 18 years at the Atlanta Temple. He was a long-time resident of Mableton since 1957 and had retired from CSX Railroad after 42 years of dedicated service.

He was an active family man–a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with everyone and knew how to be the life of the party. He will be missed.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 1 p.m. in the Gene Davis-White Columns Chapel with James Kelly and Phillip Kelly officiating. Interment followed at Powder Springs Memorial Gardens in Powder Springs.
