DeKalb's New Animal Shelter Opens Its Doors

DeKalb County's newest animal shelter opened its doors Wednesday, July 26 in Chamblee.

CHAMBLEE, GA -- Leaders from DeKalb County and the city of Chamblee were on hand Wednesday, July 26 for the grand opening of an animal shelter. The Chamblee facility is 33,440-square feet and sits on 5.3 acres.

The new site features a 1,300-square-foot clinic with two rooms for surgery and prep, a lab area, secure pharmacy storage and holding areas for animals, the county said. “The county is extremely grateful to the countless volunteers who advocated for a new shelter in
DeKalb County,” DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond said in a news release. “Especially the volunteers of the Animal Services Advisory Board, who provided years of guidance to ensure DeKalb has a
quality facility that provides optimal animal care and shelter."

The shelter is the handiwork of the Animal Services Advisory Board, which was formed in 2011 to offer solutions to animal services and enforcement in DeKalb.

“The new facility is a temporary sanctuary that will provide shelter to animals in need,” said
Susan Neugent, a member of the Advisory Board, was quoted as saying. “The shelter will provide
love, care and a home to county animals that are lost, abandoned or homeless.”

The facility will be managed by the Lifeline Animal Project, which is offering fee waived adoptions at the site. For the rest of July, all animals no matter size, age or weight are eligible for adoptions -- including free spay-neuter, vaccines and microchip -- without fees.
