- The heat persists, and we've been placed under another heat advisory for this weekend. The heat index will bring temperatures up to around 109 degrees in most of the state, including our area. The advisory will remain in effect until Sunday at 8 p.m. but keep an eye out for updates on the National Weather Service website here. Please postpone or limit outdoor activities, especially those more susceptible to heat-related illness. Drink your fluids and stay inside and familiarize yourself with the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which is considered a medical emergency. (Woodstock Fire Department via Facebook)
- For the first time ever, the City of Woodstock is holding a household hazardous waste collection event. The event is for Woodstock residents only and will be held on Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Woodstock City Church by appointment only. This is your chance to get rid of your paint, chemicals and pesticides, Styrofoam and clean and dry plastic film, but no commercial or home-based business waste will be accepted. You can find a full listing of accepted waste and register here. (Woodstock News Post)
- There's an extremely sad scam going on in our area, the Cherokee Sheriff's Office (CSO) warns, with the culprits preying on people at their lowest of times. The suspects will watch obituaries and then contact family members that have recently lost their loved one, telling them that they are with the funeral home and that the family members will need to send money by Venmo for them to go forward with the funeral. It is advised that if you receive a call like this, to hang up, contact the funeral home and file a police report. Nobody should be contacting you by phone, text or email demanding money by way of Venmo, gift cards, cryptocurrency or a bank deposit. (WSB-TV and CSO via Facebook)
