- After several black bear sightings in the Woodstock area earlier this month, there have been more reported to Cherokee County E 9-1-1 in the last few days. This time around, bears were spotted in the area of Stringer Road in Hickory Flat and near Highway 92. The Department of Natural Resources asks that county residents remove birdfeeders, trash, grills and pet food bowls from outdoor areas while the bear are presumably moving through the county. You can read more about bear safety and deterrents here. Do not approach the bear and keep a watchful eye on pets and children while they're outside. (Cherokee County E 9-1-1 via Facebook)
- Temperatures are rising in our area, and it's time to think about the dangers of and precautions against heat exhaustion and heat stroke. For today and tomorrow, there's a potential of 105-degree temps or higher, with the heat index. It's important for people and pets to hydrate and cool down often, and always check, then double check, backseats and trunk areas for children or pets before walking away from a car. Heat exhaustion symptoms include dizziness, nausea and weakness, while confusion, headaches and the loss of consciousness are signs of heat stroke. If you suspect either, reach out for medical help. (Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services via Facebook)
- Tonight is the opening night reception for the new, juried show at the Reeves House Visual Arts Center. The exhibit, "All the Fixins: Artists from the South," includes paintings, drawings, mixed-media creations, sculptures and photographs from 32 southern artists to be voted on by two jurors. The three winners will be announced at the event tonight, and the public will also have a chance to cast their vote, with the People's Choice Award winner being revealed around the Aug. 6 end of the exhibition. Tonight's reception is free and starts at 6 p.m. at 734 Reeves St. (Woodstock Arts)
- If you're looking for something to do with the kids today, it'd be a good time to check out the TrailStory installation along the Towne Lake Pass Trail. The TrailStory program was created by Woodstock Parks and Recreation and the Sequoyah Regional Library System and is geared towards school-aged children. Take a walk down the trail to see signs posted with pages from "Daniel's Good Day," by Micha Archer. You'll also see QR codes on the signs that, when scanned with your smartphone, lead to questions about the book. The next iteration in August will feature "My Papi Has A Motorcycle," by Isabel Quintero, along the Rubes Creek Trail. (Woodstock Parks and Recreation)
- Members of the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners and school board, Cherokee County Chief Appraiser Steve Swindell and Woodstock Mayor Michael Caldwell will be speaking on the county's taxes at a scheduled July 13 meeting. The meeting will be held at the Chambers at City Center, located at 8534 Main St. There is time set aside in the meeting agenda for citizens to be heard.
