📰 News we're reading

1. Pedestrian Lying on Road Killed in Fatal Collision on North Nimitz Highway (kitv.com) — Honolulu police are investigating a deadly collision on North Nimitz Highway near Lagoon Drive, where a driver struck a pedestrian lying in the roadway early Sunday. The man later died at the hospital, becoming Oahu’s 82nd traffic fatality this year, well above last year’s pace. Authorities say speed, drugs, and alcohol do not appear to be factors.

2. Man, 55, dies after falling ill in water during Makaha snorkeling tour (staradvertiser.com) — Honolulu police and Emergency Medical Services report that a 55-year-old man died after falling ill while snorkeling off Makaha on Sunday morning. First responders performed advanced life support and took him to the hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead. No foul play is suspected, and the case is classified as an unattended death.

3. ‘Protect our environment': Mercedes-Benz emissions fraud settlement announced for nearly $150M (khon2.com) — State officials in Honolulu have announced Hawaii’s share of a nearly $150 million national settlement with Mercedes-Benz over alleged diesel emissions fraud, bringing more than $260,000 to the islands. The agreement addresses defeat devices in hundreds of affected vehicles sold or registered here, with consumer protection leaders in Honolulu stressing accountability and cleaner air for future generations.

4. State competition lowers condo insurance prices (hawaiinewsnow.com) — Honolulu condo owners are starting to see big breaks on insurance bills as new state-backed hurricane coverage forces private companies to slash premiums. A Moiliili building’s hurricane policy dropped by more than half, and lawmakers say expanded “all perils” coverage and a repair loan program could soon help more older Honolulu condos finally qualify for affordable protection.

5. State offers gift cards, increased sheriffs patrols to lower traffic deaths on our roads (khon2.com) — Honolulu drivers are being asked to help cut traffic deaths through a new state app that tracks safe driving and offers gift card rewards. Alongside the Hawaii Safe Roads Challenge, state sheriffs based in Honolulu and across Hawaii are stepping up speed and DUI enforcement to support county police and address the island’s rising roadway fatalities.
