5 Movies Shot In Idaho

Idaho may not be Hollywood, but a few film makers have chosen the state to hit the big screen.

BOISE, ID — The movie industry does not employ 100,000 here in the Gem State, but a few films on the big screen do have Idaho beginnings. Some of these you may have seen, but all of the following movies were filmed right here in little old Idaho.

A cult favorite, Napoleon Dynamite tells the story of an awkward teen growing up in a small town in Idaho. The filmmaker grew up in Preston, Idaho so decided to shoot the film in his hometown. After the film debuted, fans flocked to Preston and see the homes and school in the film.

Smoke Signals

An independent film, the movie is recognized as the first to be written, directed, and produced by Native Americans. Smoke Signals was shot mainly on the Coeur d' Alene Reservation.

Bronco Billy

The film starred Clint Eastwood as a trick rider in an old West show. The movie was shot in and around Boise and hired many local residents as extras. In addition, many local landmarks can be seen in the movie.

Dante's Peak

The movie is set in Washington State and tells the story of a number of volcanoes erupting and destroying people and towns. The film was shot in Wallace, Idaho.

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot

Clint Eastwood must like Idaho as he made this second movie in Hells Canyon.
