Boise Briefing: Failed Override; Rental Caps; Anti-Sectarianism

The Idaho Legislature continues to take center stage in today's Boise Briefing. After a veto by the governor, the Senate came up a vote short of an override. With rentals in short supply around Boise, others outside the city are feeling the sting of application fees. A developer wants quite a few townhouses in an area off Vista while education funding continues to be stalled, prohibiting state lawmakers from going home. Finally, the Ada School District should soon have a new superintendent.

1. The Idaho Legislature was unable to override Governor Brad Little's veto according to KTVB-TV. The veto came on SB 1136, a bill that would limit a governor's emergency powers. The Senate vote came up one vote short, 23-12.

2. Also on KTVB-TV, Boise has a rental cap application fee, but much of the rest of Treasure Valley has no such cap. The City of Boise capped the fee at $30 in 2019, but fees in other areas typically exceed that amount.
3. The Boise Bench may soon look different if a developer is able to rezone a piece of property. The land, two blocks from Vista Ave., currently has four homes. The developer wishes to remove the homes and build 40 townhouses according to BoiseDev.

4. The Legislature continues to stall on funding for education and according to IdEdNews, a bill dealing with anti-sectarianism was pulled from debate on Tuesday, April 20. Tuesday marks te 100th day of the session.
5. The four candidates vying for the superintendent position in the West Ada School District met the community in a public forum on April 19 as reported by CBS2-News. A final decision is expected on the new hire on April 27.
