Here are the top stories today in Boise:

  1. A Critical Incident Task Force has determined Caldwell police were justified in its fatal shooting of a 92-year-old man. KTVB-TV's Morgan Romero reports on the Nov. 16, 2021, incident when Kernie Armstrong was shot while sitting in his pickup parked across from his residence. The Canyon County Prosecutor's Office has not released the full report on the incident. (KTVB)
  2. Saturday marks the opening of the Boise Music Festival and LITE-FM's Michelle Heart provides all the information you need before you head out to listen at Expo Idaho for a full day of music. Tickets are still available and children under 12 are free when accompanied by an adult. (LiteOnline.com)
  3. Numerous groups have come together to make sure families are safe while attempting to beat the heat in Boise this summer. Boise Patch provides the story of free life jackets at local ponds thanks to a $3,000 donation to the city. The jackets range in size from child's size to adults and are all properly certified for use. (Boise Patch)
  4. Birth rates in Idaho peaked in 2007. Those children are soon to graduate high school and in a new report, Idaho colleges will soon see a declining rate in admissions. IdahoEdNews reporter Kevin Richert writes Boise State University now receives a majority of students from outside the state's border and Idaho's colleges and universities lost 5,000 students during the 18 months following the pandemic. A robust job market has also translated to fewer students opting for college life after high school. (idahoednews)
  5. If you stopped at the Boise Starbucks on Fairview Avenue on Thursday, you had the choice of paying for your morning brew inside the store or accepting a free Nitro Cold Brews with Oat Milk Mocha, a vegan cold brew coffee from Rise Brewing Co. from a protestor outside. The Boise Weekly's Nick Danlag was up early along with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) members as your morning cup of joe was met with protests. (boiseweekly)
