Boise is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Boise has its own special traditions and history that make it so unxique.
A few things to know:
- Boise is home to one of the largest concentrations of Basque population in the United States, with over 16,000 Basque Americans living in the city. Visitors can experience Basque culture at the Basque Museum and Cultural Center, which features exhibits on Basque history, language and traditions.
- The Idaho State Capitol building in Boise is the only capitol building in the United States heated by natural geothermal hot water. Visitors can take a tour of the building to learn about its unique heating system and see the stunning architecture.
- Boise is home to The World Center For Birds of Prey, which houses over 200 birds of prey from around the world. Visitors can see these majestic birds up close and learn about their habitat, behavior and conservation.
- The Boise River Greenbelt is a 25-mile path along the Boise River that is perfect for walking, biking and jogging. The Greenbelt features parks, bridges and wildlife viewing areas, making it a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts.
- Boise is the birthplace of Albertsons grocery stores, which started as a single store in 1939. Visitors can still visit the original store, which has been restored.
- The MK Nature Center, located on the Boise River, is a great place to learn about Idaho's fish and wildlife. Visitors can explore indoor and outdoor exhibits and see live animals, including trout, raptors and river otters.
- Boise is known for its vibrant arts scene, with numerous galleries, museums and theaters. The Boise Art Museum, for example, has a large collection of contemporary American art and hosts a variety of exhibitions and events.
- The Old Idaho State Penitentiary is a historic site that operated from 1872 to 1973 and is now a museum. Visitors can tour the cells, gallows and solitary confinement area and learn about the prison's notorious inmates and escapes.

- The Boise River is a popular spot for kayaking, rafting and other water sports. Visitors can rent equipment or take a guided tour to experience the river's rapids and scenic beauty.
- Zoo Boise is a small but impressive zoo located in the heart of the city. The zoo features over 300 animals from around the world, including big cats, primates and birds of prey.
- Albertsons Boise Open, a professional golf tournament, is held every year at the Hillcrest Country Club. The tournament attracts some of the top golfers in the world and is a great opportunity for visitors to see the pros in action.
- The Idaho State Museum is a must-visit for history buffs. The museum features exhibits on Idaho's Native American tribes, pioneers and statehood, as well as rotating exhibits on a variety of other topics.
