🌱 Boise Raft Arrest + Record Surplus + Downtown Electric Bikes

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Boise.

We are all very aware today is Independence Day, but Monday, July 4 is also National Barbecued Spareribs Day. The two do fall in line with each other nicely.

Here are the top stories today in Boise:

  1. The typical outcome of tubing the Boise River is a sunburn, a leaky raft and an occasional scrape on the arm from getting too close to the trees. Not so for three men on Saturday as a trip down the river resulted in a trip to jail. KTVB-TV staff have the story of a day on the river ending with charges of petty theft, resisting and obstructing and battery on law enforcement. (KTVB.com)
  2. July 4 is the nation's birthday, but we missed July 3 as our state's birthday. East Idaho News reporter Rett Nelson provides information on our 1890 inauguration into statehood, the origins of the Gem State, and the steps Washington and Nevada took to claim us. At one time, members of the Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints were prevented from voting, holding public office or serving on a jury in the state. (eastidahonews)
  3. Maybe next year, you will celebrate July 4 in a new neighborhood, attending a new neighborhood barbecue and living in a new home. Boise Patch has five new properties for sale in Boise this week, a chance to start your journey for next year's holiday. (Boise Patch)
  4. A good day is checking the balance of your bank account and finding a positive amount showing. The Idaho Capital Sun's Clark Corbin reports the State of Idaho had a really good day as June 30 marked the end of the fiscal year and a $1.3 billion surplus. The dollar amount marks a record amount of extra cash for the state. (idahocapitalsun)
  5. In just a few weeks, a new mode of travel will be available in Boise. KIVI-TV's Nicole Camarda writes Valley Regional Transit will launch a new electric bike-share pilot program in downtown Boise on July 13. 50 of the electric pedal assist bikes will be ready to cruise the streets for $10 an hour or for a monthly $39 membership.
