Carol, who lives in Emmett but is looped in on Boise news, is not a fan of our mayor. She questions her initial choice for police chief as well as other political activities in the city. Good leaders must be the priority, she states, if Idaho is to thrive.

Here are the top stories today in Boise:

  1. The Boise Daily continues with the series authored by IdahoEdNews reporter Carly Flandro's look at teachers in Idaho. Each year, Idaho colleges churn out those looking to become teachers, but a shortage still remains. The story looks at the numbers showing professionals are entering teaching, but few stay in it even for five years. (idahoednews)
  2. A Boise business will soon close their doors after 113 years. BoiseDev editor Don Day writes Idaho Blueprint & Supply Co. has decided to call it quits in December. Surrounded now by restaurants and bars, the building was once the site of Boise's first fire station-until it burned down. Current owners Christian and Sheila Cummins sold the building earlier this year to developer Jay Story and say the printing industry has changed. (boisedev.com)
  3. Long before trendy cigar shops, there was Hannifan's Cigar Shop in downtown Boise. Looking ahead to Halloween, FromBoise's Amanda Patchin provides a local ghost story involving the 1956 murder of Cora Lucyle Dean by Raymond Allen Snowden. Stabbed more than 20 times, Dean met Snowden at the famous Garden City dive bar, the HiHo Club. Snowden disposed of the knife outside Hannifan's and was found hiding inside the cigar shop. Sentenced to death, Snowden was the last person hanged in Idaho, but with a catch. His neck failed to snap and he slowly strangled to death. Numerous reports of ghostly footsteps come from sources, but it is unknown if the steps belong to Snowden returning to where he was caught or Dean returning to where her blood was washed off Snowden's hands. 4. A Boise man has been to sentenced to 30 years in prison for producing child pornography. Boise Patch reports 29-year-old Zane Beckman was found with explicit photos of a 4-year-old and an 8-year-old that Beckman took in his residence along with hundreds of other child pornography photos after a search of his residence. Beckman has also been ordered to serve a lifetime term of supervised release following his prison sentence. (Boise Patch)
  5. Boise may not be sliding into the Pacific Ocean, but Idaho has encountered eight earthquakes in the last 30 days with a magnitude of 2.5 or higher. CBS2 news staff report the quakes have all been in the Sawtooth or Salmon River mountain areas, but all of us should plan for an earthquake and learn tips during the Great Idaho Shakeout on Thursday at 10:20 a.m. There will be drills in some schools, museums and government offices.
