- As the legislators move into homes around Boise for the upcoming session, City Cast Boise speaks with Boise State Public Radio's Jimmy Dawson on how our fair city ended up the state's capital. Boise literally stole the designation from Lewiston. In 1864, papers designating Lewiston as the state capital were placed in a safe in the Lewiston jail. The territorial secretary named himself acting governor, grabbed some federal troops and broke into the Lewiston jail. He broke the lock on the safe, stole the papers and grabbed a ferry back to Boise and installed the state's capital right here. It is no wonder there is some long running animosity between Boise and our northern neighbors. (citycastboise)
