Here are the top three stories today in Boise:
- The campaign for one of the new city council districts in Southeast Boise is now underway as Jordan Morales, the department manager for Boise State University's Computer Science Department, has officially filed paperwork to run in District 4. Previously considered for a City Council appointment, Morales is committed to addressing housing affordability, promoting alternative transportation, supporting the Boise Police Department, and advancing climate change initiatives. As the only candidate in the district at present, Morales aims to leverage his knowledge of the area and work diligently to meet the needs and opportunities of the community. (Boise Dev)
- Passionate testimony was heard during a lengthy public hearing in front of the Boise City Council regarding the proposed zoning code rewrite. More than 90 individuals signed up to testify, expressing their views both in favor of and against the rewrite, which focuses on density and affordable housing options. Some opponents argue that it targets affordable communities and neglects the concerns of the people, while supporters believe it addresses the city's growth and housing demand. The Boise City Council is set to deliberate and make a decision on the zoning code rewrite following the public hearings. (KTVB 7 News)
- Following a serious assault at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution in Boise, Idaho State Police detectives have been called in to investigate the incident at the request of the Idaho Department of Correction. The assault involved two residents attacking a 26-year-old resident, who was subsequently hospitalized in critical condition. (Local News 8)
