While many Boise residents chose to relax or get out of town for the long weekend, Ada County's top law enforcement official used the three days to unexpectedly announce his retirement- by email. Legislators chewed up some cash while staying in town for a historic session and the deadly days of summer driving started with a horrific fatal crash. These stories and more are in today's Boise Daily.

Patch Pick: Here is a story without almost no information. Ada County Sheriff Steve Bartlett delivered an internal email during the long weekend announcing his quick retirement (effective immediately). Katie Terhune of KTVB provides what little information is available in this strange turn of events for the county's top law enforcement officer.

1. Family budgets in Boise took a hit as an announcement concerning rents was published by News Staff at idahonews. Looking at the 100 largest cities in the nation, Boise led in rent growth, jumping by 6.6 percent in May. (idahonews)

2. The longer the Legislature is in town, the more taxpayers foot the bill. According to the Idaho Capital Sun's Clark Corbin, the last 1.5 months of the session cost Idaho over $500,000 in expenses. (idahocapitalsun)

3. Mike Saitz of IdEdNews provides an interesting editorial on the similarities of Idaho's recent Indoctrination Task Force and McCarthyism. (IdEdNews)

5. The Memorial Day Weekend kicked off Idaho's 100 deadliest days in terms of driving. The grim numbers started off quickly as four people were killed in a crash on U.S. 95 on Saturday as reported by the Idaho Statesman's Max Stevenson and Nichole Blanchard. (Idaho Statesman)

- Country music singer Tracy Lawrence appears at the Expo Idaho Grand Stand starting at 5:30 p.m.

- The Payette Brewery is offering Yoga in the Park taking place at the east end of the Payette Brewery parking lot. The stretches start at 6 p.m.

-The Tag You're It sale starts Wednesday at the Boise Rescue Mission. The sale benefits the homeless in the Treasure Valley.
