The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Boise.

You stop by to find that Hawaiian shirt needed for a dance or maybe to search for an elusive antique hiding on a shelf. Wednesday, Aug. 17 is National Thrift Shop Day so stop by and find that Van Gogh hiding in the back of the store.

Hello, everybody! It's me, John Braese, your host of the Boise Daily — here to explain all the most important things happening in town. Let's do it...

Our reader question for the day celebrates our posting announcing National Thrift Shop Day. Now is the time to tell everyone your secret on that one find you made. Did you find a handbag at a yard sale worth thousands? Did you pick up a plate at a thrift shop only to be offered hundreds of dollars by an antique dealer? Let us know your greatest discovery by emailing john.braese@patch.com.

Welcome to the Wednesday edition of the Boise Daily. A promise of hundreds of local jobs sits empty in our first story and Boise stepped up to help fill students' backpacks. The state's lead attorney's office has admitted a mistake and evidence related to a missing Boise man has been found in Arizona. 📢 I’m looking for business owners and marketers in Boise who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Boise Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that’s you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories today in Boise:

  1. The parking lot is empty, and the offices sit with no employees busy at desks. BoiseDev editor Don Day examines the plans Amazon announced for a warehouse in Meridian. After the commerce giant announced plans for jobs and help to "local entrepreneurs" last summer, the finished building sits unused, and the property was sold in May to Florida-based Carter Exchange. (boisedev.com)
  2. Boise residents stepped up when the call went out for kids needing school supplies. CBS2 news staff write that over 500 children will receive back packs filled with supplies thanks to the generosity of kindhearted Boiseans. The local Salvation Army teamed with CBS2 and CapEd Credit Union to gather the necessary items and stuff the backpacks with supplies broken up by age groups and grades. (idahonews)
  3. You have undoubtedly seen an error in the Boise Daily. Even with proof reading and a second set of eyes looking the Boise Daily over before being sent to you, typographical errors take place. Now, even the Idaho Attorney General's Office has admitted to goof. The Idaho Capital Sun's Clark Corbin reports the state agency is accepting responsibility for an error related to the Quality Education Act, a ballot initiative you will be voting on in November. (idahocapitalsun)
  4. A backpack with identification belonging to a Boise man missing since 2014 has been found by Arizona firefighters. KTVB-TV's Alexandra Duggan reports a crew was preparing a containment line on the Dragon Fire in Grand Canyon Junction when they stumbled on a backpack. Identification belonging to 36-year-old missing Boise man David Alford was found inside. Alford has not been seen since 2014 when he was observed hitchhiking on an interstate in the area. After the backpack was discovered, a search of 370 acres was completed with no other signs of Alford found. (KTVB)
  5. Grab that reel and rod, steelhead season is here. The outlook, according to Idaho Fish and Game's Joe DuPont, is better than last year, but not as good as previous years. While this year's numbers started off well, fish passing over the Bonneville Dam dropped significantly recently. The limits for the combination saltwater/freshwater fish are included in the article.
