Here are the top stories today in Boise:

  1. The federal government is suing the State of Idaho over the state's newest abortion law. Boise Patch reports the U.S. Department of Justice announced the suit Tuesday, stating Idaho law violates federal law and criminalizes doctors who provide medically-necessary treatment to patients. Idaho's newest abortion law is scheduled to go into effect later this month . (Boise Patch)
  2. Neighbors helping out neighbors in a time of need is common in Boise, but here is a big one. CBS2 news staff write the Interfaith Sanctuary has offered the use of their building to the Idaho Youth Ranch as a temporary distribution center. The Youth Ranch lost its own center due to a massive fire on July 18. The act will allow the Youth Ranch to again start taking donations and distribute items to their stores throughout Idaho. (Idaho News)
  3. A Greenleaf man is heading to prison for 6.5 years after convictions of unlawfully possessing a firearm and an assault on a U.S. Forest Service officer. But this story, written by BoiseDev senior reporter Margaret Carmel, contains some scary ties to Boise. During a search of Erik Ehrlin's home and vehicle, a bullet was found with Boise Mayor Lauren McLean’s name written on it and a journal entry referencing her. Bullets were also found with references to "BLM" and "FEDS." Also found in the search were items needed to impersonate a law enforcement officer and during court proceedings, Ehrlin stated Canyon County Sheriff’s deputies forced him to possess firearms and commit the crimes he was found guilty for. This is a lengthy, extremely well written article with pictures of court evidence we believe readers will find disturbing. (boisedev.com)
  4. The migration of California residents to Idaho started well before the recent boom. KTVB-TV's Brian Holmes goes back to 1862 as Californian George Grimes arrived in Idaho City looking to make a fortune. Like very few, Grimes and his partner, Moses Splawn, discovered gold just days after arriving, but the good news was short lived. Grimes was killed shortly after the find by members of the Bannock Tribe, unhappy gold was found on their hunting grounds. Death did bring Grimes notoriety as a creek, a mountain pass and the surrounding area memorably bare the name of the dead miner. The creek that once held a fortune for a California transplant is now a favorite destination for Boise families looking to head to the mountains. (KTVB.com)
  5. Time passes and memories fade. A recent visitor to Boise was on the campus of Boise State University to help those memories become permanent. Boise State Public Radio's Samantha Wright speaks with Danielle Anderson, director of the StoryCorps Mobile Tour. The visiting recording studio, housed in a traveling trailer, will be in Boise through Sept. 2 recording your memories. (Boise State Public Radio)
