Here are the top three stories today in Boise:
- The relocation of Interfaith Sanctuary's emergency shelter to State Street has turned out to be more expensive than initially planned. The estimated cost for the larger shelter in the old Salvation Army warehouse is now $14.5 million, with $8.9 million raised so far. The increased cost is attributed to rising labor and materials expenses, as well as design changes required to meet conditions imposed by the City of Boise, including the separation of single adults and families, which necessitated the construction of a new floor and a specialized noise-buffering fence. (Boise Dev)
- The average rent costs in the Boise market have decreased by 5.5 percent over the past 12 months, providing some relief to those struggling with affordability. However, a closer look reveals that rent has been consistently rising year by year, with double-digit percentage increases in 2020 and 2021. The significant growth in the area and the shortage of affordable rentals have created a situation where many people are unable to afford rent and face eviction, leading to a spike in eviction hearings. - KIN, a basement restaurant in downtown Boise, has been a creative hub for artists and a theater of food for the past three years. Its unique ambiance, featuring secret entrances and rotating artwork, has garnered attention, and this year, chef Kris Komori from KIN has been selected as a finalist in the prestigious James Beard Awards. The restaurant's ever-changing menu and collaborative approach have contributed to its success and recognition within the community. (KTVB)
