Here are the top stories in Boise today:
- Boise residents will have a choice in the election for mayor. KTVB-TV's Alexandra Duggan reports former Boise Police Chief Mike Masterson has officially filed his candidacy to run for Boise mayor. Masterson spent 38 years as a police officer and 10 years as the Boise Police chief before retiring in 2015. (KTVB.com)
- The Furry Friends were out in force over the weekend. This is the name of a group of volunteers in Boise who spent the day picking up dog waste in the Foothills and joined by KIVI-TV's Steve Dent. The group also recently installed a dog waste bag dispensary in an attempt to make it easier for dog owners to police their own walks. On Saturday, the group picked up 70 pounds of dog waste. - Since 1906, downtown Boise has been the site for the historic Masonic Temple Lodge. Now, according to a report by BoiseDev senior reporter Margaret Carmel, new owners of the building have applied for a permit to do demolition of some of the walls on the second story but maintain the first floor and exterior of the historic site. In 2012, the Boise City Council designated the Lodge a local historic landmark. (boisedev.com)
- A Boise physician faces three felony charges after years of investigations in two counties finally came to a conclusion. Boise Patch reports the arrest of Richard Pines, 63, on three counts of Lewd Conduct with Child Under 16. The Boise Police Department worked with the Boise County Sheriff’s Office and the Boise County Prosecutor’s Office for several years into multiple alleged crimes in Ada and Boise County. In 2021, investigations into new crimes that occurred in Boise County against three juveniles between 2004 and 2008 again brought the case to the forefront. (Boise Patch)
- Many in Boise complain about the influence of people moving in from other states. Here is one idea we hope does not transfer. KIDO-AM's Kyle Matthews reports a California lawmaker is proposing a ban that would take Skittles, Sour Patch Kids, Pez and more off the shelves. The ban is targeting items made with propylparaben, red dye 3, brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, and titanium dioxide, ingredients also found in sugar-free gum and Campbell's soup.
